Red Lions give Badolato one, final
championship
THE DAILY TRIBUNE (Updated 30 October 2009)
San Beda drew strength from the
clutch performance of Arthur de la Cruz and Baser Amer as it ripped
Letran, 86-75, yesterday to clinch its 17th juniors title overall
while giving its legendary coach a fitting parting gift in the 85th
NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
De la Cruz, son of former PBA star Art, sizzled with eight of his 23
points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of booming triples
down the stretch while Amer spewed fire with 21 points he spiked
with six rebounds, six assists and a steal to clinch the Cubs’ first
crown since they reigned supreme four years ago.
The Mendiola-based school, which seized the opener, 98-75, last week
before dropping Game Two, 80-83, Saturday, thus went home with their
17th championship, next only to the Mapua Red Robins’ league-best 18
titles.
The title conquest was also a warm tribute to its multi-titled
mentor Ato Badolato, who is retiring this year after steering the
Cubs to 16 crowns since he took over the helm 37 seasons ago.
“It’s a sad and happy feeling,” said a teary-eyed Badolato, hugged
by legions of San Beda supporters headed by league president and
school rector Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB.
“Sad because I’m going to give up coaching and this good team and
happy that we won,” he added.
Some of Badolato’s former players who came to watch the game and pay
tribute to the man who helped mould their careers included RP team
under-16 coach Eric Altamirano, Smart Gilas Pilipinas standout JV
Casio, Jenkins Mesina, Ford Arao, Yuri Escueta, Xavier Nunag, Mike
Bravo, Arvie Braganza and Mike Baldos, among others.
NCAA Swimming: San Beda Red Sea Lions, topped
swimming tourney
Wednesday, August 26, 2009
San Beda leaned on the spectacular effort of
Teohdy Gavino as it topped the 85th NCAA swimming competition for
the second straight year held recently at the Trace Aquatics Center
in Los Banos, Laguna.
Gavino emerged with an impressive 215-point performance to collar
his first MVP trophy after he edged his team captain Mach Frigillana—a
four-time winner of the highest individual plum—and MagGyver Reyes
with 184 and 178 points, respectively.
Gavino highlighted his amazing feat by shattering three marks—the
50-meter backstroke (28.63), the 4x50m medley relay with Frigillana,
John Aninon and John Simora (1:52.65) and the 4x100m medley relay
with Frigillana, Reyes and Adrian Reyes (4:09.05).
San Beda’s timeless swimmers
By Mandy Navasero - Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Time is the measure of their strength in the
swimming pool. Now, their strength has been heralded as timeless.
Recently, the San Beda College Alumni Association (SBCAA) and the
San Beda College elevated three Bedan swimming champs to its Hall of
Fame. The award is the highest recognition any Bedan can receive
from his alma mater.
Ral Rosario was a gold medalist in numerous Asian Age Group Swimming
competitions. Aside from being a representative of the Philippines
in the 1972 and 1975 Olympics, he was also an Asian swimming record
holder. His commitment to the sports continued and he even served as
president of the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association .
Dr. Ramon Ricardo A. Roque or Cardie was a gold medalist and record
holder of the Asian Age Groups, Palarong Pambansa, National Age
Groups, National All Students, NCAA and UAAP swimming competitions.
With his dedication to the sport, he spent many years coaching the
senior and junior swimming teams of San Beda College. Cardie is
currently the vice president of the Philippine Amateur Swimming
Association.
Carlos “Pinky” S. Brosas is another Bedan swimming great who gave
impressive performances and posted record times in many
international swimming competitions. He figured in the Asian Age
Groups and the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. Pinky now
serves as head coach of the Philippine National Swimming Team.
Their greatness as swimmers is defined by more than their
outstanding performances in international competitions. Their
commitment to the sport, which is vivified by their continuous
involvement in sports development, shows the true timelessness of
their value as Filipino Bedan sportsmen.
